Business Member Q&A: Dan Webster from Container Brewing
We’re fortunate enough to have business members from all industries around the Greater Vancouver Area. A recent business member to join the Modo Community is Container Brewing – a locally owned and operated brewery in East Vancouver. We chatted with one of the Co-founders, Dan Webster, to find out what they’ve been up to and their plans for launch!
1. Tell us a bit about yourself and Container Brewing
Container Brewing was co-founded by myself and Terry Brown, my best friend of 30+ years. Container started off as a passion project for the both of us.
As avid home-brewers for years, we decided it was time to turn our passion into our life’s work and to create something meaningful for the community where we work and play.
This isn’t our first go-round at a business together, having started a successful bicycle repair business as young entrepreneurs. We learned how to run a business and grow our passion for bicycles, which allowed us to join a well regarded bicycle shop where we continued to grow. Ultimately becoming managers at a young age, we learned the responsibilities and values associated with operating a small business.
That time in our lives influenced our outlook on employment, as respect and fairness to staff and business partners will be the cornerstone of Container. A friendly atmosphere for both employees and patrons, a place where hard work pays off and is rewarded, a place where sustainability is always top of mind, and finally a business that is truly a part of the community.
2. Where did the name Container Brewing come from?
The name Container Brewing comes from our brand ethos of being a blue collar, sweat equity kind of business. The name itself kind of came out of nowhere, and fit the ethos.
3. What excites you about the brewery industry in Vancouver?
One of the most exciting things is that it’s still growing. There’s room for more, and all are continuing to be successful. Additionally, it’s a very collaborative industry. It’s just amazing how much camaraderie there is, and how much each brewery is willing to help one another.
4. Why did you choose Modo?
Two reasons: one is that the Strathcona BIA – which we’re a part of – has a great relationship with Modo that avails a great discount for us. Two is that it’s a great service for when we need larger vehicles for pickup and delivery of items.
5. How do you plan to use Modo now and in the future?
We have already used Modo in fact; to go get some equipment from the Island. We anticipate using Modo for similar equipment gathering, as well as short term delivery needs.
6. What’s your favorite experience while using Modo?
So far I’ve only used the Ram van, and it was a fun trip to Vancouver Island visiting other breweries!
