Meet the Terminal City Glass Co-op
In our Co-op series we’re introducing local businesses, to celebrate Co-op Week 2016! Terminal City Glass Co-op is the only non-profit, co-operative glass studio in Canada. Artists work independently out of the studio on Parker Street, which offers access to high-quality glassmaking equipment and resources for established artists and “newbies” alike.
Terminal City Glass Co-op
We asked artist Holly Cruise, founding member of Terminal City Glass Co-op, a few questions around the co-op. Holly has been blowing glass since 1995. Her glass objects & jewelry, which can be admired at the Culture Crawl in November. Visit the Terminal City Glass Co-op artists at the Eastside Culture Crawl, located at 1191 Parker Street on November 17-20 and watch for our Modo event shuttle, right by Espressotec!
Q: Who can be part of the Terminal City Glass Co-op?
A: Anyone! We welcome anyone who wishes to apply, regardless of skill level or past experience. Beginners, established artists and supporters of the art of glass are all included in our membership. Access to the equipment is gained by learning with us, but we encourage anyone who is interested in glass to become a part of our community.
Q: You’re hosting a Hot Glass Cold Beer event on October 29th , can you tell us more?
A: Hot Glass Cold Beer is an amazing event and fundraiser for our non-profit studio. This year we have 9 excellent local breweries serving their delicious beers. Tickets are $55.00 + GST and you get a Limited Edition handblown taster glass by artist Scott McDougall (to take home!) & 7 beer tasting tokens. Plus we will have a costume contest, a carved pumpkin contest (carve the pumpkin at home, bring it down!), Music by DJ Darkcloud, and exciting glassblowing demonstrations! It’s super fun, and all proceeds go to helping TCGC build educational and artist resource programming.
Q: Your most valued co-op principle?
A: Personally, I like the community building aspects of co-ops. It’s very rewarding to be a part of community conscious group, and seeing people come together and care about something collectively is really special.
