Modo’s NEXO Member Q&A

You asked, we’ve answered – with the help of the Hydrogen Fuel Cell Association we answered all your pressing NEXO questions, submitted via Modo’s Instagram. The NEXO is powered by hydrogen, a fully sustainable energy source, which allows the vehicle to emit clean water vapour and purify the air as it is being driven.

How far can you take the NEXO on one tank of fuel?

One full NEXO tank can travel 600km.

Are there charging ports around the city like with electric cars?

Yes, there is currently a hydrogen fuel pump at 8686 Granville St, Vancouver.

We’re pleased to announce that a second station will open mid-July at 4505 Canada Way, Burnaby.

Will Modo add more EVs too?

Definitely, we are always looking to increase our fleet of EV & Hybrid’s. We have just launched a new EV on Vancouver Island (Saanichton). 1 in 5 Modo is already a Hybrid or EV.

What’s the benefit of Hydrogen over a regular EV?

A fuel cell electric car (FCEV) offers excellent driving range (600-700 km) and performance in colder temperatures. FCEVs also have a short refuelling time in comparison to charging times for battery electric cars and eliminate the need for equipment such as home chargers as FCEVs can be filled up at local gas stations. This would greatly benefit drivers who reside in apartment/condominium buildings and town homes and do not have the space to install a home charger. Additionally, FCEVs have access to an unlimited fuel supply as hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe!

Are there any limits to where I can take a NEXO hydrogen car?

With one public hydrogen station already operational in Vancouver and a network of six hydrogen stations on the way for British Columbia, the increasing hydrogen refuelling infrastructure coupled with the excellent driving range of the NEXO has considerably expanded the possibilities for FCEV drivers to travel beyond Metro Vancouver and explore other parts of the province.

When will there be more fuelling stations available?

In addition to the hydrogen station in operation in Vancouver, a second station is currently under construction in Burnaby and five additional stations in Metro Vancouver by 2020.

Is a Hydrogen fuel tank any more risk than a gas fuel tank in the car?

Hydrogen fuel is stored at high pressures (up to 70 MPa, 10,000psi) in tanks much stronger than typical gasoline fuel tanks. The hydrogen storage tanks are designed to withstand twice the maximum pressure to avoid rupture. The tanks undergo rigorous testing to validate the safety of the vehicle under severe or unusual conditions to meet the federal standards for vehicle crash safety. Sensors are located throughout the vehicle and, in conjunction with the safety systems, ensure that the driver and the vehicle are safe in the unlikely event of a hydrogen leak.

For a limited time: Our NEXO offer for Modo members
