Oct 1 – Stack The Rack 2012, A benefit for QMUNITY
Vancity presents this second annual fundraising event to benefit QMUNITY, BC’s leading queer resource centre. Featuring fine wines, renowned pianist Sara Davis Buechner, and live and silent auction items, the event is hosted by CBC’s man-about-town Fred Lee and Oprah Winfrey Network’s Isla Traquair at the Old Boneta Restaurant in Gastown. All proceeds go toward supporting QMUNITY’s vital programs and services. Tickets
Oct 2 – First Tuesday Monthly Business Mixer, LOCO
LOCO’s monthly mixers are hosted by its members. Think factory, store and warehouse tours with good local food, drink and discussion. Get to know other LOCO members, strengthen community and leverage the LOCO network to support a stronger local economy. This month’s mixer is hosted by Mills Basics. Tickets
Oct 5-7 – Vancouver Art/Book Fair, OCW Arts & Publishing Foundation
Modo is a proud sponsor of the first annual Vancouver Art/Book Fair, held at the Vancouver Art Gallery. With more than 70 local and international publishers of books, magazines, zines and printed ephemera by artists, designers, publishers and institutions, VA/BF showcases emerging practices and contemporary dialogues in publication through a series of talks, book launches, readings and more – plus free tote bags and coffee. Oct 11 – Hope in Shadows 10th Anniversary Exhibition, Pivot Legal Society
See the complete collection of this year’s winning images from the 2012 Hope in Shadows exhibition (the top 40 selected from 5,000+ entries), meet and hear from photographers and calendar vendors, and celebrate 10 years of Hope in Shadows, at Pendulum Gallery. The 2013 Hope in Shadows 10th Anniversary calendar (launching Oct 2) will be available for purchase.
Oct 14 – Winter Gardening Construction Workshop, Vancouver Tool Library
Learn to recreate a cloche greenhouse in your own backyard! Vancouver Tool Library offers this workshop to show you how to protect your garden from the frostier winter months and keep it bearing vegetables for much longer. Register online or in the shop at 3448 Commercial St.
Oct 14 – Advanced Bike Mechanics: Bearings & Rotational Systems, HUB
Explore what makes your wheels turn and pedals spin as this course from HUB (formerly the Vancouver Area Cycling Coalition) looks into bearing systems and how to overhaul them. Bicycle bearing systems should be overhauled at least once a year, and this is essential knowledge for the cyclist who wants to learn how to replace and repack and adjust your bearing systems. Oct 16 – Birth Story: Ina May Gaskin and The Farm Midwives, DOXA Documentary Film Festival
DOXA presents this feature-length documentary about a counterculture heroine and her spirited friends, who began delivering each other’s babies in 1970, on a caravan of hippie school buses, headed to a patch of rural Tennessee land. Oct 20 – Harvest Festival, Vancouver Farmers Market – West End
The annual Harvest Festival at the West End farmers market returns with recipes, information, cooking tips and demonstrations. In addition to the seasonal bounty of squash, apples and pears, don’t miss Heritage Grains Foundation’s grain display and milling and sprouting demos and Hazelmere Coffee’s coffee bean roasting demos throughout the day. And enter your pie in the pie competition!
Oct 20 – Intro to Tools Workshop, Vancouver Tool Library
The Vancouver Tool Library’s ever-popular Intro to Tools Workshop is back! If you missed it in previous months, now’s your chance. Become confident using commonly used tools through practicing and great tips from our instructor. Bring your questions and project ideas with you! Oct 27 – Secret Souls Walk, Public Dreams
Produced by Public Dreams, with more than 130 performers and 15,000 participants last year, Secret Souls Walk starts from a secret starting point in East Van and leads participants through alleys transformed by the neighbourhood and local artists, to become a journey back in time, through the past incarnations and hidden stories of Vancouver, with music, performance, installation art, and much more. Join one of the workshops leading up to the event, Oct 17-26at Britannia Community Centre, facilitated by professional artists.
