Join a City Commons project this week/weekend to bring beauty, food and community cohesion to the nooks and crannies of our city!
Building planter boxes and park benches for the ugly parking lot at Main & Kingsway, a communal cob oven for baking bread near Nanaimo & Hastings, or a urban farming research and education space at 41st & Blenheim (and more!), each project engages community members to transform public space.
Check out the full schedule – and join us at the launch event this evening at Safe Amp (Astorino’s at Commercial and Venables)!
What is City Commons?
City Commons is a multi-day, citywide placemaking event that encourages community members to work together to repair, transform, and make shared places. By day, participants will collaborate on placemaking projects. We will continue to gather into the evening for workshops, live music, and activities that celebrate our neighbourhoods.
How to participate?
1) Show up at a site, ready to help out. You can commit the time that you have, whether that is one hour or four days. You can bring tools, friends, music, or food to share as well! You are not obligated to stay at one site over the course of the event. You may move around to different areas, depending on your interest, availability, and the needs of the various sites. If there is a site in your neighbourhood that you are particularly drawn to, feel free to stay there the whole time.
2) Attend evening events. There will be workshops, facilitated discussions, activities, block parties, and live music. Come out and play!
3) Spread the word. Tell everyone you know about City Commons!
