Win big when you run hard for Take A Hike
Read on to find out how to win prizes from Modo and the Running Room!
Since becoming title sponsors for the Modo 8k Spring Run-Off, we’ve had the privilege to get to know the team behind Take A Hike. And we’re inspired by the work they do to empower students who might otherwise never finish school to not only graduate but also heal and grow themselves and their communities.
Just as carsharing helps to build healthy cities by reducing vehicles on the road to lower air pollution, preserve green space and encouraging more active modes of transportation, Take A Hike fosters healthy people and communities by providing a support system, access to nature, an experiential learning environment and a culture of service to one’s neighbour.
As part of this full-time alternative education program at John Oliver Secondary School, students build healthy bodies by spending a full day every week in the wilderness; this, in addition to regular therapy, helps students focus on their schoolwork to develop healthy minds; they then do 60 hours of community service per school year to help contribute to the health of their community. As a result, more than 80% complete the program every year.
To witness the impact Take A Hike has on its students, watch this fantastic report from CBC’s The National.
Life-skills tests show that Take a Hike helps students improve their self-esteem, connection to the school, communication skills, management of stress, and social skills. Students are not only graduating from high school, they are going on to professional trades programs and post-secondary school.
The results are real, and you can help.
